PREDICTIVE RESERVATION OF A COMMUNICATION LINK FOR A PACKET-BASED REAL-TIME MEDIA SESSION

A method and system for reducing latency in establishment of a real-timecommunication session, such as an instant chat session for instance. Themethod and system provides for detecting the occurrence of a triggeringevent(120)that indicates a user (A,B) is likely to soon request initiation ofa real-time media session, before the user (A,B) makes the request. Inresponse to detection of the triggering event (120), it reserve a dataconnection (122) through which the session can be set up and carried andmaintaining that data connection for a certain period of time. Thereafter, ifand when the user (A,B) actually requests initiation of a session (124), dataconnection will readily be established.
