Provided are devices and methods fordetermining the spatial orientation of a target sample,which devices and methods are useful in auto focussystems. The devices and methods function by correlating(a) the location of radiation on a radiation detectorof radiation reflected by the sample with (b) theposition of the sample, and in some embodiments, adjustingthe position of the sample, the position of anoptical device, or both, in accordance with the locationof radiation reflected by the sample onto the detectorso as to maintain the sample in focus.
