A naturally occurring component which can remove a nitrogen oxide and a sulfur oxide readily and efficiently is discovered. Disclosed is a toxic oxide-removing agent comprising the component. Specifically disclosed is a toxic oxide-removing agent comprising, as an active ingredient, an essential oil produced from a xylem and/or a leaf of at least one tree selected from a group consisting of trees belonging to the genus Chamaecyparis in the family Cupressaceae, trees belonging to the genus Cryptomeria in the family Taxodiaceae, trees belonging to the genus Abies in the family Pinaceae, trees belonging to the genus Eucalyptus in the family Myrtaceae, trees belonging to the genus Sciadopitys in the family Sciadopityaceae, and trees belonging to the genus Thujopsis in the family Cupressaceae. Also specifically disclosed is a method for removing a toxic oxide from air, which is characterized by bringing air containing the toxic oxide into contact with the toxic oxide-removing agent.
