Disclosed are: a novel method for stabilizing a hemoprotein, which has a superior effect of stabilizing a hemoprotein in a sample compared with conventional methods; and a composition for use in the method. Specifically disclosed is a composition which is intended to be added to a sample that is suspected to contain a hemoprotein to thereby stabilize the hemoprotein contained in the sample. The composition comprises haptoglobin or a derivative thereof having a dissociation constant (Kd1) (i.e., a measure of the affinity for the hemoprotein) of less than 10-9 M and a low-binding substance having a dissociation constant (Kd1) (i.e., a measure of the affinity for the hemoprotein) of 10-9 M or more, wherein the low-binding substance is contained in an amount that falls within the range from a molar concentration calculated by multiplying the molar concentration of haptoglobin or the derivative thereof by a value 100-fold smaller than a dissociation constant ratio (Kd2/ Kd1) to a molar concentration calculated by multiplying the molar concentration of haptoglobin or the derivative thereof by a value 100-fold larger than a dissociation constant ratio (Kd2/ Kd1).
