Disclosed is a method for treating the surface of a metal, which enables the improvement in surface properties such as surface hardness and wear resistance of a metal of interest in a simple manner and at low cost using only an extremely simple facility, and in which the deterioration of the metal can be prevented and therefore high value can be added to the metal.Specifically disclosed is a metal surface treatment method characterized by heating a metal (10) of which the surface is to be treated in a nitrogen gas atmosphere (S) in such a state where the metal (10) is embedded in a carbon source powder (12) comprising a carbon powder and a powder of iron or an iron alloy mainly composed of iron and containing carbon, whereby at least the surface of the metal (10) is nitrogenated or nitrogen is absorbed in at least the surface of the metal (10) to modify the surface.
