The invention relates to a unit and a method for cataloguing archaeological ceramics according to the origin thereof, based on the analysis of ultrasound signals transmitted through ceramic samples being studied. The invention can provide accurate and standardised information about the studied samples, such that the region and/or kiln of origin thereof can be determined, as well as allowing easy user handling without incurring a high implementation cost. In addition the invention can be adapted to numerous types of archaeological activities, such as establishment of origin, chronology and restoration, rendering same of use to museums, archaeologists and restorers.
