The method and the system for optimizing optical network traffic by means of advanced simulated annealing techniques minimize the number of electrical/optical and/or optical/electrical conversion devices for a predetermined volume of optical network traffic or, alternatively, maximize optical network traffic for a predetermined network configuration with a fixed number of electrical/optical and/or optical/electrical conversion devices by adjusting the result to the external links or conditions. The result of the method is a set of light paths, which carry the optical network traffic by means of wavelength division multiplexing, as well as the number and location of the electrical/optical and/or optical/electrical conversion devices (ADM).
