PURPOSE: A fluid dynamic bearing motor for use with a range of rotational speed rated disc drive memory device products is provided to operate at different rotational speeds during memory operations.;CONSTITUTION: A fluid dynamic bearing motor includes a rotatable component that is relatively rotatable about a stationary component, defining a journal bearing(206) therebetween. The rotatable components include a shaft(202) and a hub(210). The shaft is a stationary component, and the sleeve(204) is a rotatable component. The hub includes a disc flange, which supports disc pack for rotation about an axis(260) of the shaft. The shaft and the hub are integral with a backiron(215). One or more magnets(216) are attached to a periphery of backiron. The magnets interact with a lamination stack(214) attached to a base(220) to cause the hub to rotate. The magnet is formed as a unitary, annular ring or can be formed of a plurality of individual magnets that are spaced about the periphery of the hub.
