PURPOSE: A method for determining variable preload of a spindle for a machine tool is provided to determining an optimal preload quantity by calculating a lifetime of a bearing, a rigidity, a condition of generating gyroscopic sliding. ;CONSTITUTION: A method for determining variable preload of a principal axis for the machine tool is as follows. The reaction force which is adding to bearing through the analysis of a spindle system is calculated. The bearing interpretation of getting information about distribution of internal load of the bearing and contact angle is operated. The calorific value is calculated according to the life span of bearing and slipping. Through the calculated value in which a plurality of sections, the preload is restricted by the bearing slipping is divided. The optimal preload is determined by next equation after selecting the minimum and maximum preload quantity in the section which is satisfied the lifespan of the bearing.
