PURPOSE: An apparatus and a method for detecting the quench of a high temperature superconducting coil are provided to form a quench detecting circuit using a simple computer software. CONSTITUTION: A quench monitoring starting part(130) starts quench monitoring by comparing voltage values of both ends with a pre-set quench monitoring starting voltage value. A maximum value storing part(140) stores maximum voltage values of both ends and a maximum secondary differential value. A quench detecting part(150) detects one of a recovery state, a thermal runaway state after insufficient recovery, or a typical thermal runaway state. A quench protecting part(160) induces the storage energy of a high temperature superconducting coil to the outside according to the detected state of the quench detecting part.
