The open-porous metal foam body consists of iron based alloy having 15% of chromium and 5% of aluminum. The foam body is gas-tightly formed. The maximum portion of nickel in the iron based alloy is held small so that alpha structure is present in the structure. A specific surface of the foam body is 10-25 mm 2/mm 3and has a roughness of 50-200 mu m, where further alloy elements are present with a portion of greater than 1%. An independent claim is included for a method for the production of a metal foam body.
