The method involves representing a graphical surface element (22) at an edge (20) of a display surface (2) of a display device, and detecting a drag-drop-user selection of another graphical surface element. Position of a graphical marking (27) on the display surface is detected with respect to one of additional symbols (33, 34) by a control device. A transient graphic element is represented in a display area of the additional symbol, and the additional symbol is replaced by the graphic element, where the graphic element is linked with a software object according to the user selection. An independent claim is also included for a computer program product with a program code for executing a method for controlling a display device.
