The slicer (1) has a circular knife (11), which is rotatably driven for separating slices of a food strand. The food strand is supplied to the circular knife by a feed device (3). The feed device feeds the food strand by an electric linear motor (35) in a driven manner. A feed arm (33) of the feed device is connected with a rotor (32) of the linear motor. The linear motor comprises a stator (31) with a smooth surface, and the rotor is guided along the smooth surface. The stator comprises a round cross-section, and the rotor completely surrounds the stator.
