The method involves detecting an actual value of a side edge position of a printed sheet by a sensor. An adjusting signal for an actuating device is produced by a control device based on a comparison between the actual value and a reference value. The printed sheet is shifted from the actuating device on a feed table (16) transverse to a transportation direction of the printed sheet without making the printed sheet to come in contact with a side edge catch during misalignment of the printed sheet transverse to the transportation direction of the sheet.
