The method involves determining a composition value (32) of a fuel mixture from consumption of the fuel mixture during no-load operation of an internal combustion engine. Lean-burn running limit of the internal combustion engine for the fuel mixture is determined. Another composition value (33) of the fuel mixture is determined from the lean-burn running limit. Composition (30) of the fuel mixture is determined from a combination of the two composition values, where the combination of the values takes place by averaging of the two composition values. An independent claim is also included for a device for determining composition of a fuel mixture of two fuels for operating an internal combustion engine.
