The drive (1) has an electric motor e.g. asynchronous motor or synchronous motor, with a winding arrangement and a converter. The winding arrangement comprises sub-windings (2.1, 2.2) and the converter comprises two sub-converters (3.1, 3.2) e.g. electronic power converters. The sub-windings are assigned to the sub converters and electrically connected with each other by switch elements (6). The sub-converters are electrically connected with each other by an intermediate circuit capacitor (4). An independent claim is also included for a method for operating an electrical drive.
