The method involves detecting a relative position of an object e.g. post (12), present outside a vehicle (10) e.g. passenger car, using an ultrasonic sensor (14) of a driver assistance system. A distance of the object to the vehicle is determined based on the detected position and based on a model for an outer shape of the vehicle. A condition related to assembly or position of a component i.e. outside mirror (18), of the vehicle is detected, where the shape of the vehicle is determined by the component depending on the condition. The model is changed depending on the detected condition. An independent claim is also included for a driver assistance system for a vehicle.
