The method involves determining a required amount of fuel based on a torque demand. A required air mass and exhaust gas recirculation flow are determined based on the amount of fuel, and a nitrogen oxide set point is adjusted to carbon black limit changes caused by the torque demand. An oxygen set point is adjusted to avoid an undesirable torque gradient. A balance is carried out between the carbon black limit changes based on the torque demand for regulation of satisfactory torque. An injected fuel quantity is determined from the adapted oxygen set point and an injection mold. An independent claim is also included for a diesel internal combustion engine comprising a nitrogen oxide-sensor.
