In apparatus for weld plating of components by metal-active gas (MAG) welding, having a double torch (supported by a pendulum device and having two individual torches in series) driven at welding speed over a predetermined linear path, where the upstream torch is automatically switchable on and off and/or the downstream torch is mechanically switchable on and off, the individual torches are double-wire torches movable relative to each other. An independent claim is included for a corresponding weld plating process, in which the first (upstream) torch generates a buffer layer of the weld seam and the second (downstream) torch generates a buffer layer completely covering the buffer layer. The first torch is automatically ignited at the start of the welding procedure and the second torch is mechanically ignited when the buffer layer is formed; and/or the first torch is automatically switched off at the end of the welding procedure and the second torch is mechanically swithced off when welding is complete. The novel feature is that the individual torches are double-wire torches movable relative to each other.
