The microscope (3) has a control unit (43) for controlling a motor-driven positioning unit to change a position of the microscope and/or an operating state of the microscope with respect to an operating field (27). A storage unit (45) is provided with a stored position of the microscope and/or a stored operating state. An actuation unit (2) triggers approach of the stored position and/or stored operating state with motion speed along a traverse path. An input unit (47) is connected with the storage unit to input and/or to change a predetermined traverse path. An independent claim is also included for a method for providing controlled approach of a position of a surgical microscope.
