The unit has a two-part heat-sealing head (11) provided on a machine frame (2) with a locking device of a protective device and an associated drive. Two servo motors (1) are arranged on the machine frame via intermediate slider crank eccentrics (3). Two heat-sealing bars (6) of the head are guided in a drawer slide (5) independent of another drive. A heat locking unit is formed as a self-supporting protection unit in a manner of a closed motor bracket. A thread rolling spindle drive is arranged among the motors and the bars instead of the crank eccentrics. An independent claim is also included for a method for controlling a heat-sealing unit of a flat bag machine with a two-part heat-sealing head on a machine frame.
