The device has a supporting plate provided for holding a vignette and plaque glass and for engraving a chassis number, where location of the device is freely selectable such that windscreen parts are visible by a driver. The form of the holding device is adapted to motor vehicle-conditions. The supporting plate is illuminated to read the chassis number. A transparency surface is unsealed to compare the chassis number that is engraved in the motor vehicle with the chassis number that is engraved in the plate. The plate is made of material, which endures bonding and removing of plaque.
