The device has a lifting rod (5) controllable by a controller (3), and a coupling device (40) for coupling the rod with a label holding plate (1). The coupling device has a guide element i.e. guide sleeve (42), and a switching element (44), which is movably held at the guide element. The switching element is moved out of central position relative to the guide element by moving the plate. A sensor device (60) determines a position of the switching element. The controller is influenceable by the sensor device. The rod is designed as a piston rod of a pneumatic cylinder (12).
