A control device for setting a device for adaptive reduction of crash energy for a vehicle is proposed, and the corresponding device and the corresponding method. The control device has a first interface which provides a first signal which indicates an impending or beginning crash event. Furthermore, a computing element is provided which, depending on the first signal, generates a first control signal for setting the deformation behavior of at least one deformation element of the device for adaptively reducing the crash energy. The control unit also has a second interface which provides a second signal which characterizes at least one occupant parameter which changes as a function of the crash process. The computing element generates at least one second control signal as a function of the second signal for setting the deformation behavior during the crash process.
