The method involves detecting a present steering moment (M1) by a detecting unit (16) of a steering system (1), and determining an active driver moment based on the present steering moment. The active driver moment cycle is compared with a reference cycle or a threshold value. The active driver moment cycle is completed based on the comparison result to determine the existence of a fatigue state of a driver, where the active driver moment specifies the torque applied by the driver to steer the vehicle. An independent claim is also included for an apparatus for detecting a fatigue state of a driver while driving a vehicle.
