The operating element is formed in mushroom-shape, and has an operating element cap partially placed over a supporting element and movable relative to the supporting element in a direction perpendicular to the longitudinal axis. A function and/or sub-units i.e. cooking zones (2-5), of the appliance are selectable by horizontal mobility of the cap.
