The device (22) has two switching elements (36, 38) arranged in series to respective inductive elements (30, 32) i.e. coils. A voltmeter (46) measures a battery voltage (UA) between two ports (24, 26). A control unit (40) controls the switching elements to performs sequence of closing and opening processes, such that a current is partly guided as bypass current (IS) to a battery (12) in a first switching condition and a counter voltage (UG) is produced in a second switching condition, where the counter voltage temporarily lowers the battery voltage. An independent claim is also included for a method for controlling a charging current in a battery.
