The machine has corona-discharge electrodes (1-3) arranged on a side of a material web (14) and counter electrodes (4-6) arranged on another side, where the former side includes a gaseous, laminar boundary layer (8) to be removed. The corona-discharge electrodes are connected to positive or negative high voltage source and include multiple peaks, which are associated to the former side of the material web and aligned in a direction of the latter side of the material web. A device for removing the layer is arranged in a transport direction of an ink-jet printing device (12). An independent claim is also included for a method for operating an ink jet printer.
