The cavitator (1) has a flow chamber (5) arranged between inlet openings (3a, 3b) and an outlet opening (4). Barrier bodies (7a-7d) are arranged in the flow chamber, and planes of the barrier bodies lie transverse to a main flow direction (10) that runs from the inlet opening towards the outlet opening. A flow gap (6) is provided between edges of the barrier bodies and a housing (2). The housing comprises side walls that are parallel to each other. The flow gap is provided between an upper outer wall or a lower outer wall (28) and the barrier bodies. An independent claim is also included for a method for operating a cavitator.
