Processing a biomass comprises (a) separating the biomass into a lignin fraction and (hemi)cellulose fraction; (b) processing the (hemi)cellulose fraction; and (c) converting the lignin fraction into an organo-mineral fertilizers. Independent claims are included for: (1) an organo-mineral fertilizer comprising ammonium nitrogen, normally hydrolyzable amide nitrogen and fixed organic nitrogen, where the rate of release nitrogen in the fertilizer is adjusted by changing the ratio of ammonium nitrogen:amide nitrogen:solid organically bound nitrogen in the fertilizer; and (2) a process of producing organo-mineral fertilizer comprising ammoxidation of lignin, where the lignin is obtained from the digestion of biomass.
