The method involves determining a time window within which closing of a valve of an internal combustion engine (6) is expected, and detecting vibrations released by a valve. A determination is made to find whether the valve is closed or opened within the time window based on a criterion of exceedance of amplitudes of detected acoustic waves by a vibration sensor (1) to a predetermined threshold value, where the vibration sensor is attached at the engine.
