The device (1) i.e. high voltage generator, has a high voltage ionizer (2) comprising an electrode (22). A product of current for high voltage ionizer and voltage at the voltage ionizer is determined, and a signal representing contamination of electrodes of the ionizer is obtained. A reference signal determined with clean electrodes is considered for generation of signals of electrode contamination. Average current to the ionizer is measured for calculation of the signals of electrode contamination. An independent claim is also included for a method for monitoring an unloading device for non-contact depletion of electrostatic charges on insulating materials.
