The method involves generating a function logic (1) that is storable in an electronic controller device. A mapping is generated to assign a plug connection to an input and/or an output of the controller device for transmission of a selected signal to the function logic. A virtual signal name (9) is assigned for the function logic, and information (10) e.g. plug connector assignment and plug connector parameter, about the preset plug connection is read out from a circuit layout (2). The plug connection is assigned to the input and/or output based on the virtual signal name. An independent claim is also included for a data processing unit comprising a central data memory.
