The unit (1) has a measuring unit (5) for determining key actuation time period, and another measuring unit (6) for determining time difference between key actuations of two touch-sensitive keys (3, 4) e.g. optical keys. An incremental unit (7) performs incremental functions based on the key actuation time period and the time difference between the key actuations. Incremental speed and incremental step size are controlled based on the actuation time period and the time difference between the key actuations. A segment display (2) has LCD segments, and display fields are assigned to the keys. An independent claim is also included for a method for operating an operating unit.
