The method involves supplying a state variable linked with varying system parameters to a correction element. The state variable is multiplied with a correction term by the element, where the term includes difference between constant and variable matrix elements. The corrected state variable is subtracted from an input variable (u) of an observer (4) i.e. luenberger observer, where the variable acts on a line of a replacement system matrix (A) containing the constant matrix element such that the constant matrix element is eliminated and replaced by current value of the variable matrix element. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) a data processing program having a set of instructions for executing a method for monitoring a state variable of a time-variant system (2) a data storage medium comprising a set of instructions for executing a method for monitoring a state variable of a time-variant system (3) a data processing system for implementing a data processing program.
