The machine (13) has a stator (14) provided with a direct current (DC) excitation winding (16) for separate electrical excitation. A multipolar rotor (17) is made of a soft magnetic material i.e. steel, and is connected with a drive shaft (11) of an internal combustion engine (10) over a gear box (12) with transmission ratio of 13:1. The rotor has two radially outwardly directed north poles symmetrically distributed over its periphery. The excitation winding is supplied with DC in generator and/or motor operation of the machine by a semiconductor circuit (18) of a regulation- and control unit.
