The device (10) has a U-shaped locking bracket (18) provided with two legs (22, 23). A tubular railing element is formed such that the railing element is inserted into a support element of a post i.e. railing post. Recesses (24, 25) are provided in a region of the legs of the locking bracket for a locking unit (20), respectively. Openings (26, 27) are provided in the region of the legs for the support element. A spacer (28) defines relative disposition of the device in the support element such that the railing element is arranged below the locking bracket. An independent claim is also included for a method for placing a tubular railing element in a support element by a retention device.
