The device has a support (2) fixed in or at a vehicle for holding an image recording optical sensor element (1) i.e. digital camera, such that the sensor element optically detects a switching billet (10). A recording unit (3) records image signals that are produced by the optical sensor element. An evaluation unit (4) processes the image signals that are recorded by the recording unit. The evaluation unit compares the recorded image signals with a reference image signal. A display device (5) displays the recorded image signals, and an optical measuring platform is arranged at the billet. An independent claim is also included for a method for determining the movement of the switching billet of the vehicle.
