The device has a gear box (11) arranged partially parallel to another gear box (10). A control- and/or regulating unit (12) is provided in an operating mode to preselect a gear in the former gear box while the gear is positively engaged in the latter gear box. The control- and/or regulating unit preselects the gear of the former gear box for limitation of gear box characteristics. The control- and/or regulating unit protect gear box switch units (13-18) for synchronization. Difference rotation speed of the gear box switch units is derived from the characteristics. An independent claim is also included for a method for a gear box device i.e. dual clutch gear box device, for a motor vehicle.
