The method involves driving a door or gate element (2,5) by an electrically operated drive unit (1) through a traveling path. The drive unit with a control unit (6) and an electric motor (M) is mechanically coupled with the door or gate element directly or through a gear or a mechanical interface. The operating parameter (B-ist) of the electric motor and the control unit is measured and evaluated to the effect that a use-oriented, engine-dependent or engine application state variable is determined. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) a method for controlling an electric motor; and (2) a device for recognizing the operating mode of a door or gate control system or a door or gate drive.
