The sensor (6) has a laser unit (10), and a detector unit (44) for receiving laser radiation (18) of the laser unit. A control unit (46) controls transmission of the laser radiation from the laser unit and determines distance of an object from characteristics of the radiation. A beam shaping lens (20) enlarges the laser radiation in a two-dimensional spatial area. The detector unit spatially resolves an extraction direction of the laser radiation within the spatial area, and the control unit determines direction of the object within the spatial area from a signal of the detector unit. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) a missile comprising a laser distance sensor (2) a method for determining distance of an object.
