The device (1) has a pneumatic hammer (2) provided with an impact head (3). A processing machine (5) with a compressed air supply line (9) is provided for the pneumatic hammer. A tensioning device (6) is provided for attachment of the pneumatic hammer on a metal surface (10). The pneumatic hammer is arranged in a hollow piston element (7). The hollow piston element with the pneumatic hammer is adjustably arranged in an adapter housing (8) to position the pneumatic hammer with the impact head during pre-loading on the metal surface. An independent claim is also included for a method for processing metal surfaces.
