The device has a piston (10) and a pneumatic spring unit (16), which includes air chambers (32, 34) that partially forms a pneumatic spring. A striker (12) is acceleratably formed in a hammer pipe (14) by the spring unit in an axial direction (18). A spring element is arranged within the air chambers and partially supports the formed pneumatic spring. Valve elements (20, 22, 24) ventilate the air chambers of the spring unit. The valve elements increase a pressure of the pneumatic spring in an operating mode. One of the valve elements (24) is designed as a controllable valve element (30).
