The device has a guide rail (5) comprising spacers (9.1, 9.2), which are arranged at ends of the guide rail in a non-contact manner and measuring carriages (7), which are moved along longitudinal direction of the guide rail. A set of non-contact distance measuring units i.e. laser triangulation sensors, is provided at each measuring carriage, where a cross-section i.e. polygonal cross-section, is deviated at a location from circular shape. The measuring carriage is supported with air bearings (15.1, 15.2) at the guide rail. An independent claim is also included for a method for determining a ripple of surface areas of a rail.
