The arrangement has a radio-frequency identification (RFID) reader (100) comprising an antenna device (120) with a main beam direction (H). The reader receives a signal emitted from a transponder (200) i.e. RFID tag. A directional characteristic (R) of the antenna is oriented with respect to a movement line (B). A progress curve of signal strength is received during movement of the transponder along the movement line. An evaluation unit (110) is utilized to determine a direction of the movement of the transponder based on asymmetry of the progress curve. An independent claim is also included for a method for detecting a direction of movement of a transponder along a movement line.
