The method involves separately driving a water duct roller (18) by a dampening system (12), and disconnecting a damping application part from a printing plate cylinder (14) of the water duct roller. The water duct roller is powered and a damping solution is cyclically or continuously fed to the water duct roller during disconnection of the damping application part. The printing plate cylinder of the water duct roller is driven by a gearless drive and/or an actuator. Damping is carried out by contact of the water duct roller with a metering roller (20). An independent claim is also included for a printing machine including a control system computer.
