The method involves supplying a protection unit (PRM) in a portion of a stack (PLE) of cargo (PCG), and tilting the stack, where the supplied protection unit penetrates into a space of the tilted cargo so that direct contact between the cargoes is avoided. Separation of the protection unit from the cargo is taken place after the cargo reaches a preset layer. The cargo is tilted towards a conveyor, and is separated through recesses in the conveyor by application of shaking movements and introduction of position changes, low pressure and/or pressurized air on the conveyor. An independent claim is also included for a device for handling cargo.
