The method involves preparing a correcting variable, which indicates a mass flow adjusted by a control element (4) and controlling a positioning element (2) according to controlling of the control element, if the correcting variable is larger than a predetermined correcting variable threshold value. The positioning element is controlled such that it defines the control element in a closing position, if the correcting variable is smaller than a predetermined correcting variable threshold value. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) a device for controlling a mass flow, particularly a gas mass flow in an engine system or controlling system with an internal combustion engine; a controlling system, which has a positioning element for positioning a waste gate valve of an exhaust gas turbocharger; and (2) a computer program product with a program coded for the execution of controlling method.
