A predictive power management control scheme for a vehicle including a hybrid powertrain system

A method of controlling a vehicle having a hybrid powertrain includes monitoring vehicle navigation and traffic patterns associated with a predicted travel route. It extends the current drive train controller to a forward-looking control framework and uses pre-checked traffic and geographic information based on vehicle-specific acquisition and navigation information. An imminent road load is predicted, by means of which a fuel cost factor is optimized under a modeled predictive control framework. A state of charge trajectory is predicted from the impending road load and operation of the hybrid powertrain system is controlled in response.
