The method involves detecting a danger variable characterizing a danger source relative to a motor vehicle (3) by a sensor device (19). A time period variable characterizing a time period, which lies between an actual time and an arrival time of the vehicle, is determined in dependence upon the danger variable, where the danger source is expected to be arrived at the motor vehicle between the actual time and the arrival time. An output variable characterizing the time period is output at the driver of the motor vehicle. An independent claim is also included for a human-machine interface for a motor vehicle.
